Phil Jones makes Eden Hazard vow ahead of England vs Belgium

Better player

Phil Jones has addressed his shocking FA Cup final performance and claimed it will not happen again.

He noted that as a footballer, you have to pick yourself up and move on from things like that – and of course mentally forget as well.

Jones may face Eden Hazard – the very man he struggled so badly with during the FA Cup final – as England take on Belgium in the World Cup group stages, and has claimed he is ready for the challenge.

Standard Sport report he said: “But that’s football. These things happen. You move on. You have to, because I can’t sit on my arse and dwell on it for weeks and weeks and weeks then I’d be ready to jump off a bridge if I think like that. It was disappointing, gutted.

“Can I discard that baggage? Of course, you have to. It happens to every single player, all over the world, every day. Some get highlighted more than others, that’s football.

“I’m used to it now and I like to think I’m wise enough and experienced enough to deal with it and get on with it.”

Hazard

Of course, playing against someone like Eden Hazard is never going to be easy, and the Chelsea man prides himself on being of the best in the world.

It’s not just Hazard who England will have to watch out for, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku also ready to give England a torrid time, but Jones made it clear England have to stop worrying about other players and start focusing on themselves and what they can bring to the party.

Jones spoke specifically about Hazard, adding: “He’s sharp, he’s quick. He’s agile. And he’s a difficult player to play against. We’ve got some of them in our squad as well. I’m not too worried about other players, I’m more worried about what we’ve got.

“When I look at the squad, the training that we’ve done and the games that we’ve played, I see us doing well.

“He’s got to be up there with the best players, but I think there are a number of talented players all over the squads. We’ve got some here as well.”

Top of the group

The match between England and Belgium will go a long way in deciding who will top the group, and supposedly get a more favourable draw in the knockout stages – if there even is such a thing at this level, yet first England have to contend with their opening game.

The Three Lions face Tunisa on Monday, and seem geared up and ready to go, with the players looking more relaxed and content on the eve of their World Cup than they have in other years, and the influence of manager Gareth Southgate being praised by the fans, media and players to boot.
