Sergio Ramos denies rift in Spain camp after managerial change

No split

Sergio Ramos has made it clear the Spain side are united despite the chaos of the last few days.

La Roja of course dismissed Julen Lopetegui this week after it became clear he was set to take over at Real Madrid come the start of the domestic season – something the Spanish FA were furious about – and they appointed Fernando Hierro in his place.

There had been rumours Sergio Ramos led a coup to try and keep Lopetegui in his job, yet this failed, and now the Real Madrid defender has come out to try and quash any rumours of discontent in the camp.

“There is no split [in the squad] whatsoever,” Standard Sport report Ramos said.

“We have different opinions – that’s normal, it’s part of being human. We’re here to win the World Cup and nothing and no-one is going to change that. We need to leave these personal issues aside and win the World Cup.

“It’s not for the players to speak on these issues.

“Players don’t make these decisions. Others do. Players focus on the sporting things. We can only affect things on the pitch – that’s where we’re comfortable and do our talking. I don’t know if a mistake was made. The president and Julen had a talk and there was a difference of opinion.”

Portugal

Of course, this couldn’t have come at a worse time for Spain, given their opening game of the group stages is against Portugal and the winner of the game this evening could well top the group come the end of the first stages.

That will impact who draws whom in the knockout stages, and both sides will want the most favourable draw they can get.

Spain have seen internal issues and club rivalries hurt them before, and while the days of Xavi and Iker Casillas having to talk and help the squad put their issues aside are gone, there is certainly work to do this week for their captains.
