Should the away goals rule be scrapped? FourFourTwo investigates

English
Standfirst:
Introduced over 50 years ago to encourage away sides to attack, it’s now more likely to have home teams shutting up shop. After years of controversy, UEFA is finally considering getting rid of the rule – but why did it take so long?

Fact files:

AWAY-GOAL WINNERS

  • PSV Eindhoven, 1987/88 Squeezed past Bordeaux in quarters and Real Madrid in semis. Two decades later, away goals cost Guus Hiddink as Chelsea boss.
  • Milan, 1989/90 Arrigo Sacchi's cup-winning team had Stefano Borgonovo to thank for semi-final extra-time goal against Bayern Munich that sent them through to final.
  • Barcelona, 1991/92 'Kaiserslautern', and 'Jose Mari Bakero' – enough to make Barça fans go weak at the knees. Bakero's 90th-minute away goal in a 3-1 defeat was crucial in round two en route to Euro glory.

AWAY-GOAL LOSERS

  • Bayern Munich, 1980/81 Bavarians have gone through on away goals four times since 2006/07, but this one didn't go their way. Liverpool went through to final thanks to Ray Kennedy's 83rd-minute goal.
  • Man United, 2001/02 Unlike Bayern, it's been a stumbling block many times. Perhaps most painful in a 3-3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen, who advanced to final only to be sunk by Zidane.
  • Inter, 2002/03 Losing in your own backyard? Not nice. Even worse, the designated 'away team' against neighbours Milan were eliminated in the San Siro after a 1-1 draw. Cruel indeed.
