Calls for Man United’s David De Gea to be axed

David De Gea & Spain

It’s now two days since Spain played their World Cup opener against Portugal.

Cristiano Ronaldo stole the headlines with a hat-trick against La Roja. The Real Madrid star completed his hat-trick with a brilliant free-kick three minutes from time.

However, when it came to the Spain performances, Man United’s David De Gea had a tough evening.

De Gea is considered by many to be the best goalie in the world. However he made serious errors against Portugal.

In particular, De Gea was at fault for Portugal’s second. A low shot from Ronaldo slipped past De Gea’s hands and into the net.

Support for Man United’s number one

The front pages of both Marca and AS on Sunday have pictures of De Gea.

Marca’s headline read: “They support De Gea – Coaches and teammates rally around the goalkeeper, who is hurt after his errors”.

AS had a similar message on their splash: “De Gea in the eye of the hurricane”.

It’s also worth noting that Sergio Ramos wrote about De Gea on social media.

Calling for support to Man United’s keeper, Ramos wrote De Gea will ‘always be my goalkeeper’.

Calls for Kepa to start

However when it comes to react to De Gea’s performance online, the internet is so forgiving.

AS have run a poll on their website asking who should be in goal for Spain’s next match against Iran.

Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga was the overwhelming choice for supporters. Kepa received 49% of the vote from 39,917 readers.

Man United’s De Gea only received 38%, while Napoli’s Pepe Reina came at the bottom of the pile.
