England vs Tunisia
England’s World Cup campaign only kicks off on Monday night.
The Three Lions take on north African side Tunisia in a tricky match in Russia.
For England there is the sense that this is close to a must win game. While a draw wouldn’t be a total disaster, three points would calm English nerves ahead of the easiest looking game in the group against Panama.
But Tunisia may prove tough to break down.
Do England have the guile to carve them open? Are Tunisia capable of sucker-punching England on the counter?
England’s XI vs Tunisia leaked
On Friday the Times have leaked England’s probable XI against Tunisia. The paper report:
The England manager will pick a bold, attacking line-up for the game on Monday evening.
The formation he used in practice yesterday at the Spartak Zelenogorsk stadium is designed to be brimming with pace, and focuses on players who are comfortable on the ball.
The broadsheet believe that Southgate will deploy a 5-3-1-1 formation in their World Cup opener.
Nine players are in line to get their World Cup debuts in the match.
Tottenham and Man City will have the largest set of representatives in the team. Both Spurs and the Sky Blues should have three players in the XI.
Tottenham’s trio
It’s no surprise to see Harry Kane starting up top for England.
Kane, the England captain at the World Cup, is due to start against Tunisia as the lone front-man, much like he does for Spurs.
Kane will look to link up with his Tottenham team-mate Dele Alli in the final third.
The other Tottenham player in the XI is Kieran Trippier, who is in line to start at right wing-back.
Man City’s trio
Raheem Sterling is set to be used in a central, supporting role in England’s attack.
Sterling may well be the closest player to Kane in the top end of the pitch.
The other two Man City stars in the XI are both found in defence. Kyle Walker and John Stones will fill in two spots in the back three.
Rest of the England team
Leicester’s Harry Maguire is tipped to start for England against Tunisia ahead of Chelsea’s Gary Cahill.
Everton’s Jordan Pickford, who has the number 1 jersey, will be between the sticks.
Finally, Man United’s Jesse Lingard is predicted to start in midfield alongside Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson.
Marcus Rashford is set to miss the Tunisia game with a knock.
